Quality tailor-made holidays at the heart of Africa

Zanzibar

Zanzibar - the name evokes images of hot, sunny days on white sandy palm-fringed beaches bordering turquoise blue seas, the scent of cinnamon and cloves in the air, memories of the island's infamous past of sultans and slavetrade...

To absorb this atmosphere, one needs to spend a day or two walking through the narrow twisting streets of Zanzibar Stone Town, with 150 year old houses with crumbling stone walls, overhanging balconies and massive intricately carved wooden doors. Visit the former slave market, the old fort, the National Museum and the House of Wonders.

Aim 4 Africa is happy to organise tailormade holidays to the Zanzibar archipelago - Unguja (main Zanzibar island), Pemba island, Mafia Island and the little islets that make up this beautiful laid-back tropical archipelago in the turquoise blue Indian Ocean.

Zanzibar is an archipelago of islands - the most famous being Unguja located 25 kms from the mainland coast at Dar es Salaam. The island is famous for its mix of exotic beaches, famous spice plantations, history (Stone Town being the capital) and diverse culture. Unguja is also home to many endangered species including the red colobus monkey and green turtle.

The North and East Coast of Unguja have particularly inviting beaches with powder white sand lapped by turquoise blue warm waters of the Indian Ocean and framed by many coconut and wild date palms. This makes for an ideal location to relax particularly after a safari or trek up Kilimanjaro.

There are many excursions and water sports for people to indulge in and a whole range of accommodations to choose from.

In contrast to Zanzibar , which has become increasingly popular in recent years, Pemba still receives very few foreign holiday visitors. The island is a mixture of natural forests, mangrove swamps and clove plantations, which Pemba exports in even greater quantities than Zanzibar . The traditional villages on Pemba are primarily in the interior and have had little impact on the coast. Consequently the coral reefs around island are largely in pristine condition. It is these two factors - the unspoilt nature of the island and its colourful marine life - that are the main attractions of Pemba .

Pemba is a large island and part of the Zanzibar archipelago, lies a full 40km north of its sister island north of Unguja (the island people refer to as Zanzibar), originally named Al-khudra, "the Green Island" by the Arabic mariners in reverence of the profusion of much fertility they encountered after their journey south along the arid coastline . The green island of Pemba is richly swathed with wide-spreading mango trees and willowy cloves. Pemba was essentially the main clove producer in the Zanzibar archipelago, and at one time was the world’s largest producer of the spice. Clove harvests are traditionally laid out to dry in the sun and their invigorating scent fills the air.

This unspoilt, rural island is a world away from the tourist crowds, yet its waters are among the best in the world for diving and fishing. It is said that Captain Cook buried his treasure on a nearby island, but these days this stunning landscape is reward enough, fulfilling even the most romantic aspirations.

Mafia is a large island lying off the southern coast of Tanzania , south of Zanzibar near the Rufiji Delta. The island covers an area of 822 square kilometres (approximately 30 miles from north to south, and up to ten miles in width). Mafia is a 30-minute flight from Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar . Tourism here is only on a very small scale and with very laid back and friendly locals – Mafia rightly deserves to be termed an unspoilt Indian Ocean holiday paradise.

Mafia Island is the site of Tanzania 's first Marine Park , which was gazetted in 1995. The Park covers the southern half of the island and part of the northeast, and is one of the most important marine habitats in the world. It has mangroves, sea-grass beds, coral reefs, inter-tidal reef flats, lagoons and coastal forest. The terrain of the island is mainly sandy and flat. There is a ridge forming a backbone to the northern end but at its highest point it does not exceed 200 feet above sea level. Along this ridge there is firm and fertile clay soil and cultivation of annual crops is possible.

What makes Zanzibar special?

Zanzibar Turtle
What makes Zanzibar different to other tropical island destinations is the eclectic mix of sun, sea, sand and spice. But there is much more - vivid history, culture and a variety of excursions that makes this one of the most popular all-round beach destinations for people of all ages and interests.

Apart from this, a whole range of endangered species can be found in the warm tropical waters around the archipelago - from bottlenose dolphins and green turtles to the once assumed extinct coelecanth!

Zanzibar also hosts annual festivals and events drawing people from all over East Africa and the world.

Accommodation

accomodation
Zanzibar has a whole range of accommodations to suit different interests and budgets. Generally, the hotels in Stone Town are ideal for exploring the historic city, taking Spice plantation tours and visiting little isles around the main island (eg Changuu/Prison island, Bawe island, Chumbe island), various historic palaces and ruins, as well as taking in a lot of local culture and events.

The East Coast is very popular, with superb white sandy beaches and coral reefs teeming with underwater life. Lots of different hotels from the very small and intimate to the large, bustling resorts.

The North Coast is generally considered to be the best for those seeking more adventurous underwater safaris -scuba diving and deep sea diving particularly along the Mnemba Atoll. The beach resorts here range from standard to exclusive.

Aside from these, there are perfect private island get-aways - offered in the form of individual resorts on the little isles around the main island - Chumbe Island, Chapwani island, Mnemba Island, Bawe island and Changuu island to name a few.

Sample local cuisine - from Swahili Pilau or "vitumbua" (rice and coconut cakes) washed down with "madafu" (green coconut water) or freshly squeezed sugarcane juice to the wonderful barbeque on the Forodhani seafront at dusk (octopus, giant squid, lobster, crab, and a huge variety of freshly-caught fish from the Indian Ocean...)

The rest of the time can be divided between visiting Jozani Forest (home of the red colobus monkey and mangrove swamps), taking a Spice Tour (visit to plantations with all the spices that made the island so famous), visiting the little islands around the main island (Chumbwe, Prison Island, Grave Island and ---) and of course lounging under coconut palms with toes dangling in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. There are numerous activites available for those seeking more adventure - scuba diving and snorkelling in the coral reef surrounding Zanzibar (the underwater world is absolutely breathtaking!!!) or dolphin watching...
